Sitting is more than a physical gesture – it signifies lingering, gathering, negotiating. It is a form of communication between body, object, and space.
In collaboration with yardshedoffice and hosted within the spaces of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, a group exhibition was conceived with the aim of presenting a diverse ensemble of seating objects. The selection brings together works by emerging German and international designers and artists, reflecting a broad spectrum of approaches to form, function, and spatial dialogue.
Thirty-seven selected seating objects — ranging from functional design to sculptural gesture — are arranged within a floor grid to form a walkable archive, a contemporary topography of sitting.
In addition to the exhibition concept and curatorial work, we collaborated with yardshedoffice to develop posters, an exhibition paper, and a catalog. Three of our own objects were included in the show.

Hannes Herbst + Robert Freitag
We are designers trained in interior architecture, combining academic research with professional practice. Our studio brings together the perspectives of a graduated interior architect and an interior architecture student from the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle.
As studio herbst.freitag, based at Pittlerwerke Leipzig, we work on objects and spatial concepts informed by material-driven design and industrial production methods. Our practice focuses on the deliberate articulation of construction and materiality, treating functional elements as integral components of spatial and formal expression.
Our functional objects and interventions are intended to respond to spaces, to have the ability to structure and invite.
